May 2013 Newsletter

Dear Friends in Christ,

The world is full of troubling news.  On a beautiful day in Boston, as runners approach the finish line, bombs explode, killing, maiming and injuring those who have come out to enjoy a healthy, Spring ritual.  Toxic mail is sent to our President and other leaders in Washington, D.C.  An explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, takes lives, injures bodies, destroys homes, and decimates a community.  An earthquake in China brings death and destruction to many.  In just one week, the bad news is overwhelming.  No words can erase the pain and suffering or heal the brokenness.  Still, in the midst of sorrow and tragedy we, as the church, have a calling to bring hope and new life.  Our commission from Jesus challenges us to be bearers of good news, to be light in the darkness, to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.  Ours is a mission of hope and new life.

This year, the Outreach Committee of Fishkill United Methodist Church is taking a new approach to fulfilling our mission.  We are initiating a “Mission Challenge” which we invite the congregation to support.  The committee has set a goal of raising a minimum of $2,000 through fundraising, special offerings and mission education in order to build up our support of Christ’s mission in the world.  The money raised will be dispensed in the following manner.  25% will go to support our sister U.M. Conference in Mozambique, 25% will go to nurture the growth of the U.M. Church in Cambodia.  25% will be directed toward Disaster Relief efforts - whether locally, nationally, or globally.  The final 25% will be used to support ministry and mission in our local area.  In the near future the Outreach Committee will be soliciting suggestions from the congregation about local missions you would like to see us support (such as, Grace Smith House, the Lunch Box Project LIFE, Dutchess Outreach, and others that may be dear to your heart.)  Please be thinking and praying about where you would like to see these local mission dollars go.

The Outreach Committee has two events coming up that will launch our fundraising effort.  The church wide Game Night (with ice cream sundaes) on Saturday, May 4 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. has been set apart as a time to fundraise for UMCOR disaster relief in West, Texas, supporting one prong of our mission challenge.  A free will offering will be taken at this event.  We also invite you to bring a nonperishable item for the food pantry on that night.

The other upcoming Outreach event is the Food & Bake Sale at the Village-wide Yard Sale on Saturday, May 11.  We pray that God will bless us with a beautiful day, lots of donations of baked goods to sell, many hands to do the labor, and a tremendous opportunity to meet and greet our neighbors, inviting them to engage in mission with us.

God calls us to be hope and light in an often dark and hurting world.  Please join with your church’s Outreach Committee in taking the “Mission Challenge” by supporting both the game night and the food sale.  Please prayerfully consider how and where you would like to see your church touch the world with love, through our mission giving, and let us know your thoughts.  You are welcome to speak to the pastor, to the chairperson - Kerry Borchardt or to any member of the committee.  May God bless and multiply our efforts so we may yield an abundant harvest of hope and bear fruit for Christ’s mission in the world.

In His Service,
