April newsletter

For the last couple of years, the New York Annual Conference has been receiving money for one of the denomination’s special ministries: Imagine No Malaria.  To quote the project’s website: “Unlike many other diseases that are awaiting a cure, malaria was eliminated in the U.S. in the 1050s.  In Sub-Sarahan Africa, malaria continues to kill a person every 60 seconds.  Imagine No Malaria is part of a global partnership and together with our partners, our generation can beat malaria once and for all.”

Last month I received a letter from one of the Conference’s District Superintendents, challenging us to give $10 to help save one life.  Here are quotes from his letter.

Here’s a real story about life and death and $10.  My friend and fellow superintendent Sung Chan Kim went on a Volunteer in Mission trip to West Africa a few years ago along with other members of the church he then served.  They worked side by side with people in a certain village and formed wonderful relationships, and toward the end of their stay Sung Chan and two other people were invited to spend the night in the home of a particular family.  There was a mosquito net available, but it was big enough to cover only two people so Sung Chan volunteered to sleep outside the net – a small decision that had huge ramifications.

Two months later Sung Chan was hospitalized with malaria and for seven days was in a coma.  His condition was so dire that his wife and children began making funeral plans, but by the grace of God Sung Chan pulled through and now is completely restored to health.

As I once heard Sung Chan telling his story he talked about what having malaria had cost him:  Fifteen days in the hospital (seven in a coma); pain and weakness and a long time of recovery; anguish and worry for his loved ones, and a medical bill of over $250,000.  “One more mosquito net, costing $10, could have averted that $250,000 bill,” he said, to say nothing of all the non-financial costs.

For those of you who gave through the Easter lilies, many thanks!  For those of you who have not yet given, I am challenging you to give $10 this spring to Imagine No Malaria.  This can be done in a couple of ways:

1.    Giving cash or a check to the church during our special offerings on April 12 and 19, designated to Imagine No Malaria.

2.    Go to www.imaginenomalaria.organd click on the “donate” option.  From there, you will be able to credit FUMC with your gift.

Please consider a special gift to help save others’ lives, in Jesus’ name, as you continue to celebrate the wonderful gift of his resurrection and always-present love in our lives.

Blessings,

Rev. Linda M Willey
